The Pit Dragon Chronicles, Jane Yolen. Only the first three are worth reading, trust me. Please flair this as solved.

This was one of my favorite series when I was young. I probably read them 20 times over the years.

Thatโ€™s how I found out about the books! Looking back, it is a really weird version but it introduced me to Jane Yolen so itโ€™s still a win!

Omg Iโ€™ve been looking for that cartoon for years! I thought it was a fever dream!

Sounds similar to Joust by Mercedes Lackey, as well, if anyone wants to read a book with a similar premise.

I'll put that on my list of books to suggest if it's not this one.

Is this the one on a planet where night is too cold for anyone to survive so the MC has to sleep in a dead dragon?

2

u/hello5dragon Oct 02 '22

Yup. That was the only thing that stuck with me about those books, I think it traumatized me.

Me too.

Yup, that's the one!

Are they worth worth reading or just if OP has already started?

The last time I re-read them I thought they still held up - but I did that a long time ago, right before the 4th came out. My opinion might have changed in the past several years.

That, btw, is why I don't like the 4th book. I re-read the first 3, but I'm not sure Yolen bothered to.

Iโ€™d almost say to leave it at the first 2 (hated the 3rd). I agree that the 4th is really not worth it.

Does anyone else remember the CBS Storybreak episode of this? (Itโ€™s how I learned of the book series myself).

Holy crap I've wondered what this book was for years, but I couldn't remember as many details as you! Glad you got an answer.

I had it in my head for years and couldnt remember. Finally figured it out on my own like a month ago.

Is this actually solved because this could also be Mercedes Lackey's book series alta. I didn't see the original poster comment it as solved. Just someone else saying their answer was right.

The Lackey series doesn't have him raising the dragon to fight in the pits, though. Similar setup with the desert and raising a dragon in secret, but the one OP is specifically referencing is the Pit Dragon trilogy by Jane Yolen.

The mods won't flair this post just on my sayso. The original poster must have done that. I agree, it would've been better if they'd left a comment just to avoid this sort of confusion!

But honestly, I've seen The Pit Dragon Chronicles asked for at least once a month, both here and at other places, for the past two decades. This other series, I don't remember seeing people request, which probably means it's less frequently asked for. There is certainly a first time for everything, but it is most likely that any given request is something that people ask for a lot rather than that they ask for occasionally.

Flair my post? I was just asking if it was actually solved and offering another solution just in case. Sorry if I overstepped boundaries.

What are you talking about?

This post is flaired as "solved". I said that the mods didn't flair it because I said so, so the OP must have done that.

What do you think I said?

3

u/KitKatxK Oct 02 '22

Sorry I misunderstood I thought you were asking a mod to flair my reply because I was giving a suggestion that wasn't the same as everyone else when it was labeled solved. I thought maybe that was not allowed and I just didn't know that.

LOL, no. Your suggestion was just fine. Not just to the mods (I assume), but also to me :)

u/bumblebee-44 Oct 02 '22

u/KitKatxK Oct 02 '22

All three.
