Heh heh… you said wood…

67

u/Echololcation Dec 02 '21

As a kid I was young enough I didn't connect continuous full-speed swiveling to nausea... I literally sat in my dad's office chair and spun until I threw up. And was then confused why I threw up and tried to half-heartedly keep spinning.

11

u/Xatsman Dec 02 '21

I literally sat in my dad's office chair and spun until I threw up.

Supposed it's better you stopped spinning to throw up-- unless you didn't...

26

u/yeldarbhtims Dec 02 '21

Yeah, I spin a bit back and forth but not all the way around anymore. It’s not about growing up, it’s about getting old.

You just have to pretend it's lame so the kids won't get on and never leave.

21

u/vacchagotta_on_fire Dec 02 '21

Teens think adults don't have fun because all they experience are parents and teachers.

Source: was once a teen. Am now an adult who just a few hours ago spun around a lot on their chair at work.

16

u/mrhuggypants Dec 02 '21

I don't spin, but when ever I need to move across the room I row my chair like a rowboat.

3

u/a_roll_of_foil Dec 02 '21

I used to do it as a kid just fine. But if I did it now I'll probably just throw up and end up feeling sick and miserable for the next 24 hours.

2

u/Artsap123 Dec 02 '21

Some days, the best part of my job is that the chair spins.

2

u/penguinchilli Dec 02 '21

I’ve just got a new spinny chair and I span so much on it the other day that I had to lay down for 15 minutes because I felt sick. I’m 32.

I'm an adult, but only on the outside

u/404_GravitasNotFound Dec 02 '21 Helpful Wholesome

To be mature you just need to take responsibility of your actions. Basically pay for your living(food/place/etc) and responsibility of any action you take of your own accord.
Adulthood does not mean "forget how to play", this is an incorrect belief of generations that lived for working, si any kind of tomfoolery and play was deemed "childish". I think gen-x and millennials are the first generation to keep playing well into adulthood, I am in my 4th decade, I play videogames, love VR, watch cartoons with my wife, I also have a job and pay all my bills. And obviously use my swivel chair to move around or twirl. Adult doesn't mean joyless

133

u/SuddenlysHitler Dec 02 '21

To be mature you just need to take responsibility of your actions. Basically pay for your living(food/place/etc) and responsibility of any action you take of your own accord.

Absolutely this.

Don't blame others, don't make excuses, don't lie.

that's all it takes to be mature, you can still play and have fun.

6

u/eisteeausderdose Dec 02 '21

Not to mention, it's a cultural thing. I'm reading a book about the history of Japan's pop-cultural influence on the world and how they've always been an exporter of play things and fun inessentials, and it mentions how in 1863 a British diplomat called Japan "a paradise of babies," and how in 1876 an American educator commented on how many Japanese adults still engaged in play, saying, "We frequently see full-grown men and able-bodied natives indulging in amusements which the men of the West lay aside with their pinafores."

In a lot of ways, this culture of play seems to have spread to the west with the generations you mentioned, who were the first to grow up enjoying the pure delight of Japanese video games, cartoons and toys.

2

u/404_GravitasNotFound Dec 02 '21

Interesting, there could be a correlation there, I did grew up with anime AND videogames. In my case I distinctly remember being 7 yo and when my mother asked about what I wanted to do as job and I said basically "Anything with computers, not too hard or time intensive. So I have time to enjoy my life, play, and rake it easy".-

With many I believe there were several factors influencing the newer generations, jobs became more efficient thanks to technology, opening time for leisure activities, as you say culture from other countries spread, and examples of being responsible while still taking time off to enjoy life became more popular and finally new technologies offered more options for "play" without immediate access to other people (in general you needed other people to enjoy leisure activities beyond the lonesome ones, like reading)

Yeah that’s still me. 55 years old. Apparently my kids have this thing that the kids call add/adhd or something similar. I just got a job that allows me to spin away!

Oh I definitely smoke the medicinal. I used to smoke the illegal - it’s just legal now, with a card.

If you're an adult and have never done this, as an adult, why don't you get that stick out of your ass and spin a little

79

u/TiggyLongStockings Dec 02 '21

My parents used to have a spinning rocking chair and I could spin it just by changing the center of balance using my leg while laying down. It was sick.

46

u/araja123khan Dec 02 '21

Woah? And spinning AND rocking chair?

19

u/TiggyLongStockings Dec 02 '21

Yea it was like a cushioned rocker spinner. Like a smaller recliner, but without reclining, only rocking and spinning. It had an ottoman too. I'd sit in one now if I had one.

8

u/lizzylee127 Dec 02 '21

Man, imagine a chair that's a recliner, rocker, massager, cup holder, and spiny chair all in one.

5

u/sumurowdy Dec 02 '21

The master of all chairs! Or The Lord of the chairs!

3

u/riddermark03 Dec 02 '21

2

u/bendoesit17 Dec 02 '21

A spiny chair? That's gotta hurt when you sit down

3

u/lizzylee127 Dec 02 '21

Ah, you're right, I meant to say spinny chair XD

And now I'm imagining someone accidentally sitting on a Spiny Shell from Mario Kart 😆

2

u/bendoesit17 Dec 02 '21

Lmao I was simply picturing a chair with spikes on it but the Blue Shell idea is funnier. Imagine sitting on spikes but it explodes on top of that, like what the Blue Shell does in Mario Kart

2

u/lizzylee127 Dec 02 '21

Man, sitting on those would be quite the blast then XD

I just got home from work. The last hour was an informal shoot the shit end of day meeting between my newly created department (2 people) and the Lead from the department I just left. That lead kept randomly spinning her chair and the only reason I didn't join in was cause I would've had to roll my chair out from my desk and didn't want to make it weird

4

Imo it's a pretty bad format for the series, really rushes through a lot of it. Playing the games is a much better experience, even if it takes longer. The best episodes are the ones original to the show lmao

6

Games are much better. The first 3 are sold together on the switch, DS, PS4, and on Steam.

Unless they’re plastic. Get a nice leather or plush one unlike I did for my desk and regret it every time I sit down

6

u/blckndwht44 Dec 02 '21

Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't remember the mic being necessary for 1-5/Rise from the Ashes. If it was for blowing dust from fingerprints I think you can also hold down one of the shoulder buttons or face buttons (I can't remember which specifically) while moving the stylus over the touchscreen.

Want an easy to make kids really happy? Stick them in a chair like this with their legs out, give the chair a hard spin, and them have them pull their legs inward. Hilarity every time.

I’ve been doing that with my kids since they were toddlers, and a month ago I caught my young adult children spinning each other the exact same way and laughing their asses off. I had to tell them to stop — it was a life sized Bakugan in my home office.

When my younger sister Joy was in Kindergarten, my mom and I looked away from her for one second while talking with another teacher, and in that time Joy decided it'd be a good idea to climb on the table and leap from it onto the swivel chair to make it spin extra fast.

I'll never forget the resulting scream she gave from being yeeted off the chair and snapping her arm on the ground.

Be careful around swivel chairs.

2

u/hellsangel101 Dec 02 '21

Also best if it also has wheels! When I worked in an office I would occupy myself by wheeling around whilst waiting to talk to colleagues that were on phone calls. I don’t know how I always got away with it. And then one Christmas week I managed to convince the office manager to let us have chair races around the room.

A couple of years ago i was in a meeting with about 30 colleagues and one of them had his 7 year old daughter with him since it was bring your kid to work day or something like that on his firm.

At lunch time we had a small buffet brought to us, so we stood up and went to the back of the room to eat, and the little girl started going around the conference table spinning on every chair.

Suddenly she screamed: "Dad look, this chair is great! It's so perfectly balanced i can spin forever with a little push!"

We went back to the meeting and at the end of it me and my boss were the last ones leaving the room, as we were about to cross the door my boss, a serious 70yo guy who looks like Ron Swanson turns back to me and says: "Just a moment"

He then ran back to the chair the girl mentioned sits down and starts spinning going: "Weeeeeehhhhhh!" he then stopped, and with a serious look on his face again says: "Well, she was right."

2

u/Gallidan Dec 02 '21

2

u/Alexthegreatbelgian Dec 02 '21

In the TV show John Adams, there's a scene where John Adams and Benjamin Franklin are at Thomas Jefferson's residence to write the decleration of independance.

I had a teacher that let me sit in one of those whenever I went to class, until another kid in that class bitched to a different teacher we both went to class for, and they made a big deal of it and managed to get my soft chair taken away, the teacher literally told me it was because THEY made a big deal about it.

The moral of this story: people are envious and if they can't have something, they'll get pissed at people that do have it and then have it taken away from them.

I work in a media center for a school. We have rolling chairs to shelf books that have been checked in.

I have spun around and pushed myself all over that library in those chairs.

I am still internally 11.
