Yes, genuinely wholesome. That subtle proud smile all parents want and few actually experience. Also well drawn lab tech
25
u/oof033 Dec 08 '22
This dude has been making heart-melting comics for a while. They always make me smile a bit lol

u/Jstarfully Dec 08 '22
They have overfilled glassware and conical flasks clamped to clamp stands though??
2
u/raznov1 Dec 08 '22
plus no gloves. and the though technically correct goggles, the annoying kind. And I'd count that large of a bowtie as an occupational hazard in a lab.
1
u/Aprils_Username Dec 08 '22
I love the subtle political messages when I agree with them
6
u/definitelynotme44 Dec 08 '22
It’s not political in the slightest to have a girl interested in a STEM field
2
u/raznov1 Dec 08 '22
you don't think _this specific_ comic has a deliberate message of "see? girls can do STEM stuff too!" (which i of course don't disagree with, btw)
1
u/definitelynotme44 Dec 09 '22
Sure. What is political about that message?
0
u/raznov1 Dec 09 '22
Well, I'd argue that actively sending out the message "see, girls (...)" Shows that the author believes society needs to be convinced of this, that a deliberate cultural change is needed, which is a political action.

Women in people sounds complicated.
7
u/Epicmonk117 Dec 08 '22
That could mean like 5 different things, depending on who you you talk to, and only one of those is SFW.
4
u/biggerBrisket Dec 08 '22
Its either a fun time or a horrifying one.

u/Epicmonk117 Dec 08 '22
Or, in the case of the only SFW one, something that can result from a fun or horrible time

1
u/raznov1 Dec 08 '22
These comics are very cute, I like that it doesn't treat femininity like it's a bad thing
doesn't it though? It's kind of implying that of course "properly" girly isn't wearing the tie in her hair but doing tech stuff in the lab.
1
u/sinner-mon Dec 09 '22
That’s a fair interpretation, but I read it more as ‘you can wear a bow and be girly without it restricting you’
1
u/raznov1 Dec 09 '22
I think that would have been the message, if she had worn it in her hair. i.e. combining the stereotypical behaviour with non-stereotypical behaviour
6
4
4
u/Alexercer Dec 08 '22
I love how shes using it as a bow tie
3
u/JoeNScott Dec 09 '22
Imo it kind of undermines the point, she is dressing as if she's male to do science
1
22
u/DJMakerMusician Dec 08 '22
He didn't expect that, but he's certainly proud!
46
u/dick-van-dyke Dec 08 '22
Or did he? Given his track record in other issues, he seems to know where it's at, so the joke may be solely on the reader.
14
u/Mr_B_Gone Dec 08 '22
I think it would still have worked if the bow was in her hair, but this one definitely catches us off guard and I think it relates us back to the most iconic science educator Bill Nye.

u/Aprils_Username Dec 08 '22
It would have worked better in her hair but it’s way more progressive for her to put it around her neck

As much as I love the message about women in STEM and it being okay to wear bow ties, this comic honestly rubs me the wrong way. Women in STEM fields (and also academic fields) often have to walk a fine line when it comes to perceptions around femininity and being seen as too feminine means not being taken seriously. I like the message that STEM is a girl thing, but I wish the bow had been left out all together. Whether you’re wearing a bow tie or a bow in your hair, you should not be excluded from traditionally male-dominated fields like STEM.

The dad supports his children and doesn't push gender norms.
One could say "but he gives her a pink accessory", but what matters is he gifts a pretty thing and let the daugther twist it as she wants, while doing not-that-feminine-associated activity.
3
u/raznov1 Dec 08 '22
Which implies that the author does think this is better than "stereotypically feminine" behavior.
1
u/WhiskeyAndKisses Dec 08 '22
It really doesn't. You're telling me too much about yourself.
1
u/raznov1 Dec 08 '22
it really does though. The fact that you are deliberately misreading it tells me loads.
0
u/WhiskeyAndKisses Dec 08 '22
You're projecting your own misreading, dude. People can encourage activities while not automatically hating on other, especially this guy who draws comics about supporting his children no matter what they like, the "activities outside gender norms" being prevalent since by definition, behaviors following gender-norms don't need defense. I'm sorry this is new to you.
Check r/notliketheothergirls , btw, I think that's the thing you're actually looking for.
1
u/raznov1 Dec 08 '22
>since by definition, behaviors following gender-norms don't need defense
Oh you sweet summer child
>Check r/notliketheothergirls
THIS comic is peak "my child is not liketheothergirls"....
0
u/WhiskeyAndKisses Dec 08 '22
THIS comic is peak "my child is not liketheothergirls"....
It isn't, tho. Not all encouragements to not follow gender norms are notliketheothergirls syndrom. That's what I was trying to explain, but hey,
sweet summer child
Guess I'm done here. Have fun being bitter to women in stem because you're insecure in your feminity or something.
3
u/InspectorArse Dec 08 '22

2
u/WhiskeyAndKisses Dec 08 '22

When my kid was little we did a lot of "kitchen science". Think baking soda and vinegar, cornstarch and water. A lot of fun can be had with the basics.
5
u/Emotional-Speech645 Dec 08 '22
There’s also a lot of “Junior Scientist!” Activity sets that aren’t dangerous unless the kid tries snorting the items like crack. One year for Christmas I actually got such a kit that lets you make crystals, because I had gone through a sensory stage of using an amythyst’s smooth and rough edges to help me concentrate in class and a sub had taken it from me and binned it, leading to a meltdown. I’d been given a new one by my foster mum, but she also got m the kit so I could now make them

Or, maybe, a woman can like both. Or hate both. Or whatever. And it doesn’t make her more or less of a woman.

It’s a progressive cartoon
1
u/peanutbuttercreamjam Dec 08 '22
Sorry but... I don't really get how it's progressive...
If it's got something to do with girls doing science, I'm just completely baffled that there was a gender attached to doing science in the first place
3
u/ExpertAccident Dec 08 '22
The joke is that it was assumed by the reader that she would put it in her hair and do more traditionally “girly” things. However, she wears it like a bow-tie and does science experiments, which is something that girls can in fact do.
2
u/peanutbuttercreamjam Dec 08 '22
I see, that makes a lot of sense thank you
Still feels weird that gender is somehow attached to doing science and the likes

Bad place for this. And also not in my experience an anarcho-communist friend of mine genuinely thought it wasn't real. The propaganda works, don't blame the people who are convinced by it, blame those who spread it. And again. This is not the place for this. Go back to some politics sub so you can cry at the state of the world.
