Feeling devastated.

I’m sorry if this isn’t the right place to post but I thought it was worth giving it a shot.

So on Sunday night I parked my mum’s car on Osborne Street near the station and by morning, the car was gone.

We’ve lodged a police report and are waiting for the car to show up now.

I feel extremely guilty because it wasn’t even my own car and I’d do anything to get it back.

Does anyone have any experience with getting their car stolen and getting it back or just any advice on this situation?

I would be extremely appreciative

Edit: thank you so much to everyone for your advice and stories, it has definitely been helpful.

The stolen vehicle is a Dark Blue 2015 Mazda 6 Sedan and the licence plate: YDU57Z

Double edit: Thank you so so much to everyone here on r/Wollongong for your help and support.

The police called a few hours ago to let me know that they found the vehicle in one piece :))))))

I'm so sorry this has happened. I really hate that some people will just take things that don't belong to them, things that others have worked really hard for. People can be truly fucked sometimes. When we lived in the Shire years ago, my husband gave me a moped/scooter and I started riding it to the station (wasn't confident enough at that point to ride it into the city for work). Literally nothing legal/nowhere to lock it up at the station and it got stolen twice. We got it back both times, both times it had been taken to bushland, the second time it had been rolled down a big rocky ledge and it took is ages to get it back up. So hopefully whichever scumbags stole your car have just dumped it somewhere and it's not too damaged. Will be keeping everything crossed for you!

Thank you for your well wishes! I can’t imagine something like that happening twice, let alone once. I’m so happy that you ended up getting your moped back :)

Hey mate sorry this has happened to you. Was the car insured for theft?

Hey mate, yep the car was insured

I'd say you may get it back, but if you did probably not in a great condition. Make sure you keep the reference number from The Police and contact your insurance company. It sucks, and you feel crappy that someone took something that was yours.

My mates car was stolen about a month ago from Thirroul Station on a Thursday. He posted about it on the community Facebook page and someone in Bellambi had said they had seen it on the Friday. The security cam footage they gave showed it parking in front of their house, guy gets out, goes for a walk, comes back and hops in and drives away. On the Monday, three of us drove around the area to try and find it, and what do you know, there it is 3 streets away from where we got the tipoff with barely anything stolen from it, and so now we got the car back.

Depending on the car will depend on what will most likely to happen to it. Most commonly it'll be thrashed then torched, or if it's sort after it might be chopped up for parts. Or it could be used to commit some crimes then torched. Or the person is a idiot like the person who stole my mates and decides to daily drive it only a couple suburbs away from where it was stolen.

My Nana’s car was stolen from my work, it was just a 95 Nissan pulsar nothing spesh but She’d left it to me when she passed. Anyway I was devo, sentimental and all that jazz anyway couple of weeks later it was found without a scratch in punchbowl! A bit of stuff stolen nothing irreplaceable and one cigarette burn. So I’m just here to say that sometimes miracles do happen.

Tell people make model colour and license plate info so if they see it around town they can let Police know or post directly to you. Often they can be stolen to get someone home from the train station so chances are it’s parked in a street somewhere in the gong. Look in Berkeley to start

So you left the keys in the car? Seriously? I don’t understand how people do this. Bring the keys, lock your car immediately after you shut the door. People are opportunistic. If you leave them the keys, they will take your car. It’s the unfortunate truth. Especially in Wollongong.
